Embracing Holistic Nursing: How Acupuncture Complements Modern Healthcare
You may be wondering what this title means, and maybe not. Your healthcare needs are unique and specific to you. These are shaped by your journey, the challenges you face, or the life you wish to maintain. You may be considering a complete approach to your health. Healthcare in Ontario often wants you to believe it can meet all your needs, but this is not true. It has become more clear than ever! Healthcare continues to move to regional care facilities, using standardized practices to meet quality performance indicators. This approach often reduces you to a number and a process. However, you are a person, and your experiences and values matter. This is where holistic services come in—to help you balance what you are told you need while providing space to evaluate what can benefit you.
I have recently completed an intense three-year study in Chinese Medicine, which has felt more like a crash course. I am only beginning to explore the vast knowledge in this field. One standout element of the philosophy is "wholism," the belief that we are complete systems requiring a personal, individual approach. Many who read this can attest that this is the ideal goal for their healthcare: to be regarded as whole persons. I began this journey not knowing what was possible. With over 14 years of nursing experience, a nursing degree, various certifications, and a strong view I have been addressing root causes. I thought I was doing well in my nursing practice. Chinese Medicine was about to expand my perspective.
When picking a practitioner for your holistic care, it is key to verify their nursing registration is current. They have completed additional education in Eastern Medicine. In my case, I hold a diploma in acupuncture and moxibustion in addition to my nursing license. This allows me to perform acupuncture in Ontario. It does not allow for giving a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) diagnosis. Therefore, your care is based on a Western diagnosis. Treatment may include, but is not limited to:
- Headaches or migraines
- Period issues (pain, flow problems, irregular periods)
- Fertility support
- Cold or flu symptoms
- Chronic illnesses
- Pain management
- Digestive disorders
- Symptoms related to chemotherapy or radiation
- End-of-life symptom management
The main goal is to support your existing care while improving your quality of life.
What happens when allopathic medicine cannot address a root cause? This realization was groundbreaking for me. I’ll spare you the details. It stemmed from a conversation with a clinical supervisor who proposed this. Initially, I didn’t accept it. After reflecting on it, I admit I had not addressed root causes as thoroughly as I thought. This insight was one of several significant revelations recently. Through this lens, I offer services that aim to balance both Western and traditional Eastern approaches to healthcare. Holistic nursing care integrates your Western diagnosis with Eastern healing philosophies. This allows for a personalized care plan that meets your unique needs and expectations. Empowerment occurs when healing is grounded in a partnership between the patient and practitioner. Which enables you to explore various tools to meet your health goals.
While acupuncture is one of the services provided, it may not always be the best option. Other modalities include food therapy, moxibustion, cupping, guasha (pronounced "gwa-sha"), tui na (pronounced "twee-na"), and shiatsu.
This overview highlights care options that can influence your wellness and help you achieve your goals. I am happy to discuss your specific needs by phone or email. Holistic care can be safely offered to the entire family. It has minimal risks and without conflicts with your current medications or therapies. Holistic nursing services are ideal for anyone seeking to:
- Address unmet symptom management in their current care
- Enhance their existing care
- Explore alternative approaches to their health
