PEDIATRIC TUI NA – WHAT CAN TUI NA DO FOR MY CHILD?

4 min read

What is your daily grind? Maybe the kids are sick again, perhaps there is mystery tummy trouble that shows up at the worst time, how about the classic growing pains? The most often referred to action is to use another over the counter drug that simply covers up symptoms so we can just feel better and go on.

You want to know who remembers this; your child’s body. When symptoms are covered up again and again a pattern develops because the body doesn’t forget. Repeat ear infections, tummy troubles, colds are patterns that persist in adulthood. This is an invitation to pivot towards a safe, sensible, non-invasive model that supports children in their most common childhood issues and promotes healthy care expectations later in life too! When we listen to what the body is telling us—through symptoms, energy patterns, digestion—we can address what's actually causing the problem. This allows natural healing to happen. Children do this so well and this is where Tui na (pronounced twee na) comes in.

How about we look at some common conditions and mildly dip into why this is happening, plus how tui na could help.

Digestive issues: Constipation, diarrhea, poor appetite, bloating

Your child's digestion is unpredictable with some good weeks mixed with terrible weeks. You've adjusted diet, added fiber, cut sugar— nothing sticks.

TCM says: this happens because digestion is more than just eating food. This is the body’s powerhouse of energy production to move and feel good. When stress, busy schedules, eating literally on the run can all impact this essential process. The symptoms occur when digestion isn’t running smoothly.

Tui na helper:  You may be surprised to learn you are already likely using some of the specific hand techniques that are used for digestive issues. However, instead of being isolated to an area of discomfort, we can expand to work along the meridians. Issues resolve rather quickly often within 2-3 sessions. By combining efforts there can be real and lasting change for your little one.

Sleep problems: Difficulty falling asleep, restlessness, night waking

The bedtime battle, your child can't settle. Or they fall asleep fine but wake at 3 a.m. and can't get back to sleep. You're exhausted. They're exhausted.

TCM says: sleep interruptions can mean the “off switch” isn’t working. With exposure to a lot of input all day long – screens, schedules, expectations. These can weigh heavy at the end of the day and this is showing us that the pathways to help support calm and connection are disrupted.

Tui na helper: using techniques that let the body know to slow down and support transition to sleep can offer both exhausted parties much-deserved rest. The best part after a few professional sessions to start the ball rolling, parents can learn techniques to use at home!

Respiratory concerns: Recurrent colds, cough, congestion

You call in sick to work again because your child is ill, or thanks to recent events - your child gets the side eye for coughing in public.

TCM says: The lungs are important in the body’s defences and when illness happens often this is a message that the barrier between your child’s innate protection and the outside is weakened. Many activities common to our lives today influence this barrier such as stress, interrupted sleep, busy schedules.

Tui na helper: there are techniques that can help manage acute illnesses, ongoing problems or preventing infection. This could mean fewer trips to the pharmacy for those over-the-counter medicines and room for more natural healing. Your child feels better and you notice fewer sick days and less lingering coughs - which is an immune system working as planned.

Musculoskeletal issues: Growing pains, poor posture, minor strains

Seeing a child in pain is one of the hardest things to endure. The doctor says its “just” growing pains, but your child didn’t sleep again from pain. Or their slouch is about to make a new name as their shoulders creep to meet the ears. Maybe it was a tweak during their game recently.

TCM says: Growing pains and posture issues happen when the body's structure—muscles, meridians, and connective tissue—tightens up, holds tension, or protects itself from a previous injury. Over time, the body accepts these unusual positions as normal.

Tui na helper: this is where tui na can shine and so can your child. Here muscles and connections can be relaxed. Children tend to respond rapidly the results are often within 1-2 sessions especially for more acute onset conditions. Kids can stand taller, feel more comfortable in their body and find stability. Reducing discomfort means healing can be quicker and everyone gets back to what they love.

Behavioral/emotional: Anxiety, hyperactivity, difficulty concentrating

You sense your child is “on the edge” often, irritable, quick reactions, the smallest issues seem huge. Maybe they can’t sit still or their focus is off.

TCM says: When the body is stuck in high alert, the nervous system can't shift back to calm. Emotional regulation breaks down, and we see it as anxious, reactive, unfocused behavior. Modern life is rife with triggers; overstimulation, stress, disordered eating, disruption of routines to name a few.

Tui na helper: here we have approaches that work with the body to offer a chance to shift from “on all the time” to rest. This nervous system switch is not a cure, but it can benefit mental health by engaging the body and mind. This balance is the beginning steps towards calm, focus and less reactivity. It is not a “cure” for common childhood diagnoses like ADHD or anxiety, but it is a very effective complement to care. Above all parents and kids can learn and apply these skills.

A Note on Medical Care: Tuina is a wonderful complement to your child's health care—not a replacement for it. If your child has a serious illness, injury, or condition being treated by your doctor, always check in first. Tuina works best when all parts of your child's care team are working together.
